E3 2014: Nintendo Digital Event Recap

Sorry, Sony and Microsoft. . .looks like Reggie and co. brought their A-game!

With the Digital Event and the Super Smash Bros. Invitational on E3 Tuesday, Nintendo had was in potential to have one of those best day ever. Nintendo delivered the goods, which only kicked off the good new they would bring to us throughout the day.

We are introduced with a hilarious Robot Chicken-style sketch where figurine Reggie Fils-Aime addresses the E3 crowd readying them for some big announcements.

One member of the crowds sarcastically predicts “another Mario game”, only for Reggie to say that there were no Mario-related game announcements for the event. Mario, who is backstage, is not happy with the news at all. Link, who is usually doesn’t really speak, brags about being the new face of Nintendo before being interrupted by his smaller counterpart Toon Link.

A second audience member demands Mother 3, a sequel to EarthBound. Reggie proceeds to power up with a fire flower and sets the poor guy ablaze. I third audience member asked Who were watching the bad guys since the heroes were in the back. Almost on cue, Wario and Gannondorf appeared and Reggie runs off.

For the first trailer, we see Satoru Iwata in a staredown with Reggie. They engage in a short Matrix-style fight scene. Then they continued the fight for Super Smash Bros. for the Wii U. But they are not playing as Mario or Link of any of the already announced characters but as their Miis. As they are playing, Iwata pull out a Mario figure and places it the Wii U Game Pad. Mario appears in the game to fight Reggie’s Mii.

The Men in Grey?

Masahiro Sakura of Sora Ltd. takes over to explain how Reggie and Iwata got into the game. He assured that it wasn’t a pre-rendered cut scene but actual game footage. This is when he make the announcement of the Mii Fighter. Players can give their Miis one of three styles (brawler, swordfighter, and gunner) give the special movies unique to them. The video goes on to show off a few celebrity Miis as fighters. This could be one of the more addicting parts of Smash

Sakurai then turns his talk about the 3DS version of Smash specifically. He states that there will be more modes for that version aside from the main battle mode. Then he would show a montage of these extra modes. You may notice a few of the modes if you have played past versions of Smash.

Now back to Reggie. He pulls out the Mario figure from when he was playing Iwata. He explains that it was a special figure called Amiibo that can be used in upcoming games including Super Smash Bros.

Next we see developers Nintendo’s Takashi Tezuka and Good-Feel Co.’s Etsunobu Ebisu being interviewed in a yarn shop of all places. They are talking about their new game called Yoshi’s Wooly World, which is visually similar to Kirby’s Epic Yarn. The team discusses how they implemented a yarn Yoshi to build a fun and solid game. Looks like a game that can work.

Next we a see a trailer for Captain Toad: Treasure Tracker. Yes. That. Toad.

Next we see another sketch where Peach and Bowser are backstage having an awkward moment. Bowser asks is he could have the last donut on try. Peach eats the donut and runs away.

Not it’s time to talk about The Legend of Zelda for the Wii U. Eiji Aonuma explains the difficulty of creating an “open-world Zelda” game with evolving technology. Then he showed off the latest Zelda world. It starts peaceful with a character on top of a horse overseeing the land. Then a monster appears, attacking the figure on the horse. At the end of the sequence, the person on the horse resembles Link, but looks very different from the Link we are all used too…

Next is a trailer for Pokemon OmegaRuby and AlphaSapphire. The gameplay footage shows that it plays like Pokemon X and Y.

We are now treated to a sketch where Fox McCloud asks about Little Mac boxing gloves. Little Mac tries to pour coffee but burns himself.

Then we are treated to a Bayonetta 2 trailer. At the end of said trailer we learn that Bayonetta 2 will come with the vanilla edition, and we also get to see Beyonetta dressed up as some of Nintendo characters.

Next we are in a traditional dojo with Tecmo Koei developers Hisashi Koinuma and Yosuker Hayashi and Nintendo supervisor to discuss Hyrule Warriors, which is pretty much Zelda meets Dynasty Warriors.

A trailer for the new game Kirby and the Rainbow Curse for the Wii U. Followed by one for Xenoblade Chronicles.

We get one last Robot Chicken-style sketch where Mario and Fire Reggie stand before Wario and Gannondorf who are both KO’d. The Mother 3 guy aks about Star Fox. Reggie zaps the poor guy to oblivion.

It looks like Mario gets his wish for a new installment nnouncement. In the Mario Maker trailer, we see Mario go through a player created levels. You can view these course in either the classic Super Mario graphics or the modern New Super Mario graphics. Mario Maker looks very appealing. It should have came out ages ago.

For the last developer interview, we see Nintendo’s Hisashi Nogami, Yusuke Amano, and Tsubasa Sakaguchi in an aquarium discussing Platoon, a multiplayer game where two four-player teams battle for territory by shooting colored ink. You shoot this ink as a human but have swim through it as squid. The game looks like something multilayer fan can really get hooked on.

Reggie signs off by going through how to stay connected with everything Nintendo during E3 week. Then we see a treated to one more Smash Bros. teaser.

It starts out in with an anime-style battle between Link and Pit. Pit’s goddess Palutena appears and sends Pit away. It’s official: Lady Palutena is in Smash.

Then we see the goddess in action against the other fighters. Her moves are based on the powers seen Kid Icarus Uprising. Looks good.

In for the final clip we see Shigeru Miyamoto playing a mystery game. Though the screens are blurred, the game is almost certainly Star Fox game. Although it wasn’t announced in the video, a Star Fox game is indeed coming. About damn time.

The Nintendo Digital Event was a big hit although it was only part of the amazing day Nintendo had at E3. With this, the Super Smash Bros. Invitational, and the Announcement of Pac-Man in Smash, the hottest ticket in town was a ticket to the Nintendo Hype Train.
