Get Ready for PlayStation Now, Your Ticket to Classic Digital Content

Curing the woes of backward compatibility.
Gamer interest around the PlayStation is about to become a lot more appealing thanks to PlayStation Now, a new streaming service that will allow gamers to enjoy gaming libraries from the PSone, PlayStation 2, and PlayStation 3 era.
You may recall this is the same technology that Sony recently acquired via the Gaikai, which Sony had acquired in Summer 2012 for $380 million. The service will offer direct access to a broad lineup of classic titles via the PlayStation 4, though perhaps one of the biggest highlights to come from today’s reveal is how the range of accessibility, allowing the experience to be enjoyed on PS Vita, smartphones and televisions.

Don’t expect an extensive lineup at launch, however, it’s safe to assume we’ll be looking at a fairly sparse selection (much like the respective launch library on the PS4) when PlayStation Now officially rolls out the gate. Details of the pricing model, range of titles that will make the cut in the streaming library, or how it may tie into the Sony’s current service, PlayStation Plus have not been disclosed at this time.
Nevertheless, it’s clear that Sony has solved the dilemma for gamers clamoring for backward compatability. A closed beta is planned to debut toward the end of the month, followed by the official release on the PlayStation 4 and other supported devices later in the year.
