PAX East 2014 Hands-On: Out There
It's one of the best games you can find…out there.
While most mobile games are know for their simplicity, Out There is an exception to the rule. It is a space travel strategy game that takes a lot of skill to even be mediocre. But the game is so appealing, chances are that you will just hit restart and have no regrets about it.
Out There puts you in the role of an astronaut who wakes up from a cryogenic sleep, finding yourself stranded in an unfamiliar star system. With limited resources, you have to find your way back home.
The key to playing Out There is to keep an eye on your resources. For you need them to upgrade, fuel and repair your ship. Plus, your starting ship is has limited space, forcing you to make tough decisions in what to carry. This can be remedied by switching to a new ship but the new ship may be even worse, making you basically start from scratch. If you manage your resources poorly, or you are extremely unlucky, you will find yourself stranded in the middle of space.
[oqeygallery id=125]Presentation is one thing you don't have to worry about when playing Out There. The artwork for Out There is top notch to say the least. The spaceships in the game are well drawn as are the planets. There isn't exactly enough music in this game to warrant a full-length album, but the music that is there is beautifully composed.
Out There may not be a free game, but it is one of the few games that is worth more than its posted price. It's an out-of-this-world challenge and one of the best games you can play on your phone.
