Retrofit: Dennou Coil

Retrofit: Dennou Coil

A look at what was missed.

So everyone knows their anime, right? I mean, we all know at least a couple in this day and age through conversation or television. Have we missed some gems over the years though? I want to make it my goal to help you guys find some here and there. This will be done through an aptly titled regular series called “Retrofit”.

We have so many channels and companies to thank for our fixes throughout the years. Adult Swim and Toonami have given us series such as Cowboy Bebop, Outlaw Star, Trigun, Witch Hunter Robin, Inuyasha, and various Gundam series, just to name a few.

There are also some staple Shonen anime like Dragon Ball Z, Naruto, Bleach, One Piece, and Yu Yu Hakusho. Naturally, there are Magical Girl anime that we all know of such as Sailor Moon, Tokyo Mew Mew, and Madoka Magica. Of course, then there are Miyazaki movies, and some generic go to movies like Ghost in the Shell and Akira.

Well, I’m going to make it my goal to give you a couple series and movies that you may not have heard of a watch. I won’t overwhelm you all at once, but these will be short to moderately long anime series and a few movies. These will have already been released series, obviously.

Be forewarned, I may also give you titles to watch at your own risk. Not everything is glitter and gold. I also won’t be giving out a huge amount of details to avoid spoilers. So let’s get going.

Dennou Coil- A Circle of Children:

This series follows children as they try and solve a mystery involving cyber pets and urban legend. What stands out about this series is the excellent storytelling without using what many would consider to be your typical anime tropes.

The art style is beautiful and fluid as well. The sci-fi feel is great considering it manages to merge the cyber and real world in a beautiful manner. It’s an average length series spanning only 26 episodes, but it does leave you feeling satisfied. It had a rare privilege of getting an immediate re-run in Japan.

Tempestt’s rating:
This works from 0-10. The extremities of both ends are rare, and probably won’t be seen much.

Dennou Coil gets a 9.1 rating from me. This series is excellent, but will lose people who don’t like mystery and thinking. The lack of reliance on the more typical plot devices is one of the things that impressed me the most. The concept is an interesting spin on something you may have seen in the past.

What did you think of the series? Have you seen it? Will you go and watch it? Don’t forget to comment. Do you have a suggestion for me? Feel free to follow and let me know via twitter. @truetempestt
