SOE Sold Off and Rebranded as Daybreak Game Company
Well, this was unexpected. It looks like Sony Online Entertainment (SOE), best known for several leading multiplayer blockbusters including DC Universe, Planetside 2, EverQuest Next and the recently released H1Z1 has been acquired by the New York investment management firm, Columbus Nova. Most importantly, the studio label will be rebranded and operating under the name Daybreak Game Company.
The investment firm has expressed this acquisition will allow the studio formerly known as Sony Online Entertainment to now function independently and sees “tremendous opportunities for growth”, according to Jason Epstein, Senior Partner of Columbus Nova.
It remains to be seen if this could be a bold and beneficial opportunity for the corporation that put MMO titles like Everquest and DC Universe on the map. The company, which was founded in 2000 reportedly has a proven track record in similar industries.
This could very well end up a great launchpad for newer (and better) titles to materialize in the near future. And if the existing franchises remain unaffected and the user base continues to expand, then the boundaries for online gaming can only go up from here.
