Sony’s Crafty Plan to Beat Xbox One

What Sony was willing to sacrifice to gain an edge.
Contrary to popular belief, a new report suggests that Sony had plans well in advance that would give them a competitive advantage against Microsoft. According to a new report from IGN, Sony decided it was going to drop the PlayStation Eye sensor before the device was officially unveiled at this year’s E3 media briefing. What’s interesting to note was that Sony opted to conceal the plans of the price cut from its partners in order to prevent any potential leaks getting back to Microsoft.
You have to wonder though? Will it make a huge difference that the PlayStation4 is $100 cheaper? For the moment, yes, things seem to be paying off based upon pre-sale reports. However, the article addresses a valid scenario that Sony eventually will have to address:
By relegating the camera to a $59.99 add-on, Sony has ensured the opposite — a climate of codependency wherein PlayStation 4 camera adoption will hinge upon compelling software, but compelling software will only arrive after PlayStation 4 camera adoption.
It’s a bit amusing that Sony went to such an extent to capitalize on the initial faults of Xbox One, but in the end, all most of us will end up caring about is delivering a swath of great games.
