What does Competition mean to you?

When more than one person shares a passion for a game or sport.

Who is better? It’s been the theme of my life ironically. I’m always trying to one up anyone when it is time to compete. Whether it was answering math questions, a fighting game, or even racing in my wheelchair from one point to another, competition has been the engine that has kept me going forward.

In regards to gaming; this all started in Super Smash Bros. Melee. Throughout my lifetime, I’ve always had my brother to play against, and, in Melee, we would spar day and night to see who the best was. In time, however; we both felt that we needed to play different players and test our ability against them. Well our first tournament was a blow up.

We saw techniques others did that we had never seen before. I was pretty stunned to see my hours of play feel like a waste. We agreed to stop playing after that. After a few weeks, I kept thinking about the loss I took in the tournament. It drove me insane. How could I accept losing like this? I started playing again, and the time off really allowed me to improve.

My brother didn’t start playing when I did, but when we heard of another tournament happening soon, he instantly began training. Although we got crushed last time, our competitive drive would not let us quit. And the results showed. He got 2nd, and I got 4th. We were proud of our improvement. Then he went on and on about how he placed higher, and I was back to training.

Competition is the driving force to all tournament players that are willing to improve. It is why we train for hours and hours. It’s why we travel long distances. My furthest trip ever was because of competition. I traveled 25 hours from to for competition. Competition to me is embracing the passion I share with others and proving that passion against them. Let me know what it means to you.
