In some ways, this concept can be likened to a natural evolution of the laser tag concept, originally developed in 1979 that seen significant commercial success over the years as an iconic pop-culture pastime. Of course, we can't really consider the art of laser tag to be truly, well. . .mobile. That is until now.
The entire gaming package consists of a "Lyter" handheld device, a wireless receiver and the LyteShot-enabled apps. That's right, the main component requires something that just about everyone carries around these days – a smartphone. By using any current iOS and Android-supported device and cloud-based wireless technology, players are able to transmit data wireless with relative ease. More importantly, the results are instananeous.
The Lyter offers a variety of customization options beyond the colorful Star Trek-inspired phaser-theme design, giving you the ability to attach various parts.
Not fond of using a gun? No problem. LyteShot gives you the freedom to convert the device into popular forms so you can live out your fantasies as Link, Gandalf, or whatever your character you desire. The only limit is your imagination, and perhaps direct access to a 3D printer.
If you're skeptical about LyteShot's involvement with the gaming world didn't happen overnight. Their experience has a rich heritage spanning the past 20 years with some of the most well-known gaming development studios including Activision, Konami, Sony, Disney Interactive and Midway. Plus it's team carries a diverse range of skills and experiences that range from traditional video game development to 3D architecture, design and environments.
Of course, this is the type of venture that would require some significant funding and LyteShot has offically gone live today with its Kickstarter campaign allowing everyone to be one of the first to join the new wireless gaming movement. It's a bold (and exciting) milestone that would add a whole new dimension for how we currently use our smartphones, and at the very least – it could compel all of us to stop being couch potatoes.
Media and industry personnel who made the trip to Vegas this weekend can definitely look into dropping by the Epson Moverio booth. Members from the LyteShot team will be on-site providing live demos using Epson Moverio's BT-200 next-gen glasses touted as delivering players a new immersive augmented reality experience.
